Your choice of campaign type depends on how your business acquires customers, what data it can share with the advertising platform, and how much control you need over search queries and landing pages.
A Search campaign helps you reach demand expressed through a search query. Performance Max can pursue results across several Google channels. Both require a clear offer, a working website and accurate measurement.
Let’s look at where to start and when it makes sense to use them together.
How Search and Performance Max differ
In a Search campaign, you organise ad groups around services, keywords and landing pages. This is useful when you want to evaluate demand for a specific offer separately.
Performance Max, or PMax, is a campaign type built around your chosen conversion goals. Ads can appear across Search, YouTube, the Display Network, Gmail, Discover and Maps. The system uses your goals, assets and other signals to distribute impressions automatically. The principles are explained in Google’s guide to Performance Max.
Search campaigns can also use automation. For example, AI Max adds search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. It is a set of features within a Search campaign, not another name for Performance Max. When comparing options, check which features are actually enabled. See Google’s documentation on AI Max for Search.
When starting with a Search campaign makes sense
Search is a reasonable first test if:
- customers search for a specific service or product;
- you need to separate offers with different prices, audiences or economics;
- understanding which queries generate relevant enquiries is important;
- your creative assets are limited, but you have a persuasive landing page;
- your resources allow you to test only one focused hypothesis.
Hypothetical example. A company provides equipment maintenance. Customers search for a specific repair, and the company services particular models. A Search campaign lets you connect those queries to the relevant page and evaluate each service separately.
This does not mean Search will necessarily be cheaper. Results depend on demand, competition, your offer and how enquiries are handled.
When to consider Performance Max
PMax can be part of your plan when your business has:
- A measurable goal: a purchase or an enquiry linked to a subsequent sale.
- Accurate events and a clear way to assess outcome quality.
- Assets that explain the offer in different formats.
- Relevant landing pages for ad traffic.
- Resources to test the hypothesis and evaluate results over the sales cycle.
For an online store, also check product data, prices, availability, product pages and purchase value tracking. A Merchant Center feed is used in the retail scenario; it is not required for every PMax launch. Google provides separate guidance on creating lead generation campaigns and campaigns with Merchant Center products.
For a service business, assessing what happens after an enquiry is particularly important. If the system receives only a button-click signal, more conversions may not mean more customers.
A lack of extensive account history does not itself prevent a launch. However, limited data makes expectations harder to justify and outcome quality harder to assess. Set an acceptable spending limit and conditions for reviewing the plan.
Which PMax settings to check
Goals and audience signals
Choose actions that are genuinely connected to your business objective. Do not treat purchases, qualified enquiries and page views as equivalent goals.
Audience signals help the system begin finding potential customers, but do not restrict delivery to those people alone. Google explains this in its Performance Max FAQs.
Landing pages
With final URL expansion enabled, the system can choose another relevant page on your website. Check where visitors can be sent, which URLs are excluded and whether the selected pages match the ads.
If your offer requires one specific page, configure destinations accordingly. The options are explained in Google’s guide to final URL expansion.
Brand, queries and reporting
PMax has controls including negative keywords and brand exclusions. Choose them to suit the campaign’s purpose. Their availability does not mean that campaign management works exactly as it does in Search.
Also use the channel performance report to understand where ads appear and what results are reported by channel. Then compare the platform’s data with your company’s enquiries and sales.
Can Search and PMax run together?
Yes, if each campaign has a clear role and you have sufficient resources for evaluation.
For example, Search can address specific commercial queries while PMax tests additional opportunities to generate conversions. PMax can also show ads in Search.
Priority rules depend on the query, keyword matching and campaign eligibility. Running Search does not mean all PMax search traffic will be excluded. Define how you will handle branded queries, exclusions and account-level evaluation in advance.
Assess whether additional relevant enquiries and sales appear as total spending changes. Redistributing conversions between campaigns does not itself demonstrate business growth.
A practical selection process
- Check measurement. If enquiries do not reach the company or events are configured incorrectly, fix the enquiry journey first.
- Identify demand. If people search for a specific offer and query analysis matters, consider Search as your first hypothesis.
- Assess readiness for multiple channels. For PMax, prepare goals, assets, pages and a way to evaluate outcome quality.
- Check the retail scenario. For a store, assess the feed and purchase data; for a service, assess lead qualification and follow-up.
- Agree on evaluation conditions. Set acceptable spending, an observation period and the metrics you will use to make decisions.
- Expand with a clear rationale. Add the second campaign type when you can explain its role and measure the overall result.
If the form does not work, service terms are unclear or the company cannot respond promptly, postpone the launch until these issues are resolved. Automation does not replace preparing your offer and sales process.
