For a company selling industrial consulting, complex systems development or other high-value B2B services, a few qualified enquiries can matter more than dozens of irrelevant leads. Meanwhile, the contract may arrive months later, but the advertising budget is being spent now.
Managing this kind of advertising requires a connection between search demand, enquiry quality and deal progression. A weekly report on clicks and submitted forms is not enough.
Before launch, agree on qualification criteria with the sales team. They should describe a genuine project, rather than a salesperson's subjective impression.
For example:
The absence of a precise budget in the first email does not necessarily make a lead unsuitable. Buyers of complex services may initially be exploring possible solutions. It is more useful to record what is known and what still needs clarification.
Use distinct stages: new enquiry, qualified enquiry, project discussion, proposal, won deal and lost deal. Record reasons for rejection or loss: an unsuitable task, a different market, timing, price or no response.
In B2B, people may search for a service using the problem, technology, industry or a specific outcome. Check whether each group fits your offer.
Start with services for which there is clear demand and a suitable landing page. Track branded searches separately. Review search terms and exclude clearly irrelevant demand, such as jobs, training or doing the work yourself, if you do not offer those options.
Do not split a small stream of enquiries across numerous campaigns without a practical reason. Equally, do not combine markets or services with very different economics just to increase the conversion count. The structure should let you manage budget, offers and demand quality.
If you already receive clicks but no enquiries, use our Google Ads and website diagnostic plan before increasing spend.
Executives, technical specialists and procurement teams assess providers using different criteria. The page should explain the problems you solve, how you organise delivery and what information is needed to assess a project.
Show verified experience, the service boundaries, the stages of working together and a convenient way to submit an enquiry. Do not demand a complete technical specification if the buyer cannot prepare one yet.
For an expensive project, an appropriate next step could be a requirements discussion, a feasibility assessment or a request for an initial estimate. Our article on a B2B website with a long sales cycle explains what different decision-makers need to see.
A submitted form records an enquiry. It does not establish that the prospect is a good fit for your business.
Google Ads can track qualified and converted leads using outcomes recorded outside the ad account. The company defines the relevant stage itself: the chosen event does not necessarily represent payment. Google Ads guide to lead goals.
To connect CRM outcomes with ad interactions, you can set up offline conversion imports and enhanced conversions for leads. Implementation requires accurate data matching, compliance with data-use policies and diagnostic checks. Google's implementation guide.
Agree with your provider on:
Several events from the same deal should not simply be counted as separate customers. Nor should a page view or presentation download be treated as a qualified lead merely to increase conversion volume.
Group enquiries by the period in which they arrived and follow their progress through the stages. January enquiries may produce contracts in April; comparing January costs only with January payments gives an incomplete picture.
Illustrative example. Ad placement costs €2,000 and management costs €600. There are eight enquiries, three qualify and one deal closes. Advertising and management costs per qualified enquiry are approximately €867: 2,600 ÷ 3.
If the closed project's contribution after direct delivery costs is €6,000, €3,400 remains after the stated advertising costs. Sales expenses and business overheads may still have to be covered from this amount. It is not net profit or a forecast of repeatable performance: one deal provides too little evidence for a reliable assessment.
Plan the next period's budget using scenarios for cost per click, enquiry rate, qualification rate and likelihood of a sale. Use your own observations and show a range rather than one precise figure. Our article on calculating an advertising budget sets out the process.
If you change the budget or bidding strategy, record the date and reason. Frequent changes with limited data make it harder to identify what actually affected performance.
Include lead-quality tracking and collaboration with sales in the scope of advertising setup and management. Agree on the capabilities and boundaries using our commercial offer, and discuss any required integrations separately.
