Reels for Ads and Organic Posts: How to Prepare Different Versions

One demonstration, interview or explanation can be used in several Reels. For each placement, agree the audience, offer and next step. These determine which shots to keep, how to open the video and how to end it.

Sometimes one finished video suits both a profile post and an ad. In other cases, you will need a different opening, text overlays, music or final shot. Decide before filming and editing so the necessary materials can be prepared.

Define the purpose of each version

For an organic post, choose a useful topic: an answer to a question, a process explanation, a product demonstration or an introduction to the team's approach. Record which outcomes you will assess: meaningful comments, saves, visits or enquiries.

For the ad version, agree the campaign objective and user journey: visiting a page, completing a form, sending a message or another available action. Check that the offer in the video matches the page content and sales terms.

Both versions should make sense to someone seeing the company for the first time. If the viewer needs information from a previous post, add the necessary context.

Prepare separate openings and next steps

Introduce the viewer's question or situation at the start. For the ad version, clarify who the offer suits and which solution you are showing. An organic post can begin with a specific question from your work and develop the answer step by step.

The main demonstration can remain shared if it supports the content of both versions. Preserve the conditions, limitations and actual product characteristics.

Match the next step to the placement. If an ad leads to a service page, the closing line and ad button should direct the viewer towards the same task. For a profile post, you can suggest saving the instructions, asking a question or using a clear way to get in touch.

Build the core message using the article on writing a Reels script for a service. Set each version's length according to its content and placement requirements.

Example: two versions of one demonstration

A hypothetical example: a team shows how it checks a website enquiry form. Assume this check is genuinely part of the company's offer.

Organic version: open with “Check what happens after someone submits a form on your website.” Follow with a demonstration of submission, confirmation and receipt of the enquiry. End by suggesting the viewer saves the checking sequence and repeats it on their own site.

Ad version: open with “Need to check whether your website enquiries are reaching you?” Follow with the same demonstration and an explanation of the check's scope. End by inviting the viewer to visit the service page and send their website address through the designated form.

Before launch, check that the landing page describes the work shown, the form works and the team is ready to handle the enquiry. This example does not imply a guaranteed number of leads.

Check format, text and music

For Reels ads, Meta recommends vertical 9:16 video, audio and key elements within the safe zone. Before export, check Meta's official recommendations and the preview for the chosen placement.

Captions, price, logo and essential conditions must remain visible when the interface is overlaid. Check the finished file on a phone and in the preview: text that looks well placed in the editing software may be unsuitable when the ad appears.

Check music separately for each intended use. Instagram's help documentation describes the licensed music library as intended for personal, non-commercial use; Meta also offers Sound Collection for commercial purposes. Verify the chosen source and track's terms before advertising using the official guidance.

If the post may be promoted later, tell the team in advance. Keep the source materials and agree whether the music, text overlays or offer can be replaced.

Give the team a short brief for each version

Complete the following for each version:

  • Placement and language: where the video will appear and who it is for.
  • Purpose: the action or response the business needs.
  • Opening: the question, situation or wording of the offer.
  • Shared material: the shots that suit both versions.
  • Differences: text overlays, price, conditions, music and closing line.
  • User journey: where the next step leads and who handles enquiries.
  • Delivery requirements: format, files needed and the person responsible for approval.

Name the files so the team can distinguish the language, placement and version. At handover, check that each file uses the correct offer terms and link.

Assess each version against its agreed purpose

For an organic post, review responses related to its purpose. For advertising, also compare spending, target actions and enquiry quality. Views alone do not establish customer acquisition cost.

If testing an opening or call to action, decide in advance what changes and which data will inform the decision. The approach is covered in the article on testing ad creatives.

When commissioning Reels production, list the ad and organic versions you need. Production stages are described in the commercial offer; agree additional edits and advertising campaign setup within the scope of your specific project.
